Summary:

The objective of the project is to design and develop a disruptive system to measure the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and coagulation, for clinical diagnosis. The main aim of the system is to provide a fast measurement, with a minimum amount of sample and using sustainable materials. The system will give a better performance than the currently available devices, to enable a fast and early detection of infections, tumors or self-immune diseases and monitor the evolution of some disorders.

Project goals:

  • Global design of the device to be included in measurement systems to obtain data such as ESR.
  • Study of transparent or semitransparent materials, characterized by a low interference with the samples, easiness to clean and durability.
  • Design, fabrication and optimization of injection moulds to obtain the optical elements with the chosen polymers.
  • Study and analysis of the optimal and critical parameters to illuminate the samples for the obtention of the ESR.
  • Design of the optical system of detection.
  • Analysis and study of the different methods to measure ESR and coagulation.
  • Development of the electronics and software for signal processing and result analysis.
  • Study and optimization of the components of the device to reduce the manufacturing cost.

Ceit's role in the project:

Dentro del proyecto, Ceit es el responsable de la fabricación de moldes de inyección texturizados mediante láseres ultrarrápidos. Mediante estos moldes se fabricarán, utilizando diferentes materiales poliméricos, piezas con propiedades ópticas avanzadas que facilitarán la medida de la coagulación. Ceit también colabora en la validación óptica de los dispositivos y en el diseño de los elementos ópticos.
