Emakumeak Zientzian, the initiative that fosters egalitarian science and technology (automatic translation)

30 | 01 | 2023

Ceit, together with twenty-three other Basque entities, is organising the 7th edition of Emakumeak Zientzian, whose main objective is to highlight the importance of co-responsibility between men and women to promote egalitarian science and technology through different activities.

Ceit joins forces with twenty-three other Basque entities around the Emakumeak Zientzian initiative, with the aim of making the activity of women in science visible, breaking with the typically male roles attributed to scientific-technical activities and promoting the choice of scientific careers among girls and teenagers. With these objectives in mind, the entities and the organisation have joined forces to organise a joint programme on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which is celebrated every year on 11 February.

The Emakuameak Zientzian 2023 programme will be concentrated during the week of 8 to 17 February, and will include more than 50 activities covering a wide range of research fields thanks to the joint efforts of the organising centres.

Activities for all ages

The inauguration of this annual initiative will be held on 8 February in Donostia, where tribute will be paid to all the women scientists and technologists who carry out their work in the organisations and research centres involved in the initiative.

From that day onwards, there will be workshops, round tables and visits to the centres with the aim of presenting real models that will serve as a reference for future generations and that the message "science does belong to girls" will reach as many people as possible. The programme includes family activities, such as the experimental workshop "Stars in Science"; school activities, such as the novel activity "Back to School", which offers the possibility for schools to request a visit from the researchers to their classrooms; and activities aimed at people over 55, with the aim of highlighting the role of adult women as transmitters of culture.

As in previous years, Ceit is organising, together with Tecnun - School of Engineering, the workshop "Playing at being engineers", scheduled for Friday 17 February at 17:30 at the Ibaeta facilities. The workshop is aimed at young people in the 4th year of secondary school so that they can learn the processes involved in developing a creative product and gain visibility of the production process. To this end, all areas of engineering work are simulated, from the design of prototypes to the manufacture of parts, including assembly and distribution.

The union of 24 organising centres

The twenty-three entities organising this 7th edition of Emakumeak Zientzian are an important representative sample of the science and technology fabric in the Basque Country: the Centre for Physics of Materials (CFM CSIC-UPV/EHU), Achúcarro, CIC biomaGUNE, CIC nanoGUNE, University of Deusto, POLYMAT, Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM), Basque Center on Cognition, Brain and Language (BCBL), Biodonostia, Cidetec, Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), Elhuyar, Eureka! Zientzia Museoa, Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia (FBB), Ikerlan, Ingeniariak - Colegio Oficial de Ingenieros Industriales de Gipuzkoa, Parques Tecnológicos de Euskadi, Tecnalia, Tecnun-Escuela de Ingeniería, the Faculty of Computer Science, the School of Engineering of Gipuzkoa and the Faculty of Chemistry of the UPV/EHU.

In addition, Emakumeak Zientzian 2023 has the outstanding support of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, Fomento San Sebastián and the Basque Research & Technology Alliance (BRTA), as well as the collaboration of the following entities and organisations: The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), the State Research Agency through the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu centres that are members of the initiative, the Basque Film Library and the San Sebastian International Film Festival, and Aspegi (Association of Professional, Business and Managerial Women of Gipuzkoa), Aranzadi, the Lemniskata network, Ikerbasque, Biook and Donostia Kultura.
