Ceit-IK4 and Tecnun hosted the “Steel Industry 4.0” meeting, which was organized by PLATEA, the Spanish Platform for Steel Technology

The Steel Industry 4.0 meeting was recently held in San Sebastián, bringing together the entire network of actors involved in R&D and innovation in the steel industry, from universities to research centers, and from equipment suppliers to Spanish steel manufacturers. Some of the entities in attendance were Ceit-IK4, Tecnun-University of Navarra, Tecnalia, Fagor Arrasate, Sarralle, Acerinox, ArcelorMittal, Sidenor and the Celsa Group. The goal was to study how to adapt the concept of Industry 4.0 to the steel industry and steel products.

Experts discussed the main challenges facing steel manufacturers, which include Industry 4.0, new opportunities in construction, the use of sensors, process improvement, finishing line optimization and integrated intelligent manufacturing.

In addition, the meeting took advantage its setting and gave engineering students the opportunity to attend, which allowed them to update their image of the steel industry. Far from presenting a traditional industry, the meeting showcased the reality of an industry that takes advantage of technological innovation to make advances. This more dynamic image allows students to consider a career in the steel industry as an attractive option.

The event was held at Tecnun-University of Navarra's main campus and saw over 120 attendees, including researchers, technical staff from companies, and students. At the end of the day's events, attendees were given the opportunity to visit and get an up-close look at Ceit-IK4's facilities.
