Experts from Conaqua and Ceit-IK4 will address the topic of optimizing WWTP design and operation through the simulation of real cases


In recent years there has been an increase in the development and application of simulation tools as a means of supporting the optimization of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) design and operation.

Comprehensive WWTP simulation studies allow researchers and operators to quickly and reliably analyze the available options for improving the design, operation, instrumentation and monitoring of WWTPs. Specifically, these studies allow researchers to detect and diagnose potential operating deficiencies and processing constraints (overloads and bottlenecks at the plant, inconsistencies in the hydraulic flow and mass balance, comparing observed data, etc.), to establish general operating criteria and to estimate the technical and economic effect of each potential improvement in any working scenario by prioritizing one alternative over another. Simulation is also very useful in training WWTP operators.

All of these issues will be discussed during a day-long conference called Using Simulation Tools to Optimize the Design and Operation of WWTPs. The meeting has been organized by Conaque and Ceit-IK4, and it will take place in Madrid on November 21, with the support of the University of Navarra and Red Noveda. The aim of the conference is to discuss the various possibilities that simulation studies provide to real WWTPs in terms of designing new plants and renovating or expanding existing plants, as well as in terms of optimizing their performance.
