Ceit-IK4 has been working on a new machining process that will make it possible to modify the surface of stainless steel used in prosthetic devices


An investigation by Ceit-IK4, in collaboration with the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, has revealed a new technique for preparing prostheses, which can help reduce the body’s rejection of medical implants.

Specifically, the investigation used femtosecond laser surface texturing to alter a material’s surface topography at the sub-micrometer scale, which makes it possible to control the process of cell migration.

How does this relate to medical implants? Controlling cell migration via surface texturizing will facilitate the human body’s acceptance of the metallic parts of medical prostheses, which will in turn decrease the number of rejections.

This finding presents a major advance in the integration of materials from the perspective of medical implants. In addition, the researchers that carried out the study believe that it will be possible to use this technique with other types of materials.
