Reduction and valorisation of food waste

Summary

The NoWaste project has focused on the research and development of new technologies aimed at minimising food waste and valorising by-products generated in the production, processing, and distribution of food through the production of synthetic methane. This approach helps to promote a circular economy model that optimises the entire food value chain. The initiative has addressed multiple research lines: early detection of defects in potatoes using photonics and artificial vision; traceability and life cycle analysis of the product; sensing technologies in processing and distribution stages; improved packaging sealing to extend shelf life; development of 100% recyclable monomaterial plastic films; and valorisation of organic by-products through dark fermentation and biomethanation to produce biogas and biomethane at laboratory scale. In addition, a mathematical tool has been developed to evaluate the techno-economic feasibility of implementing biomethanation plants for different types of by-products and locations.

Objectives

Reduce the waste generated along the value chain of fresh and perishable products and energetically valorise by-products using new technologies for detection, sensing, sustainable packaging, and biomethanation.
