Modeling and simulation of the water cycle

We develop state-of-the-art modelling and simulation networks to enable the design, operation and management of water treatment plants and wastewater networks to be optimised. These tools enable efficient solutions to be identified, operational scenarios predicted and the impact on urban and industrial environments minimised.


 
 

Recovery of urban water

We design innovative solutions for transforming urban wastewater into valuable resources. Our approach focuses on the recovery of compounds with high added value, such as fatty acids and nutrients, which may then be reused in a range of industrial and agricultural applications. Additionally, we integrate processes such as co2 catchment via microalgae, which not only reduce emissions, but also generate biomass with many applications. This approach fosters a sustainable model that is aligned with circular economy principles, thus maximising the use of water resources.


 
 

Recovery of industrial water

We work on developing innovative technologies for the valuation of water, waste and industrial by-products, thus contributing towards a more efficient and sustainable circular economy. Our approach combines state-of-the-art biological processes, such as fermentation and biomethanization, with state-of-the-art physico-chemical techniques, among which attention should be drawn to sustainable hydrometallurgy and ultra-fine filtration and nanometric systems.


 
 

Digitalisation for water

We promote digitalisation of the integral water cycle, covering distribution networks, sanitation systems and wastewater treatment plants. We design state-of-the tools to support the operation that integrate data analysis and real-time simulation scenarios, thus optimising the management and operation of water resources.
