Waste

We promote state-of-the-art technological solutions for the management and valuation of both organic and inorganic waste, using an integral approach that combines innovation and sustainability. Our research focuses on transforming waste into by-products of great value via biological and physico-chemical processes and state-of-the-art recycling routes. We combine experimental methodologies with mathematical models and digital tools with a view to optimising processes and minimising environmental impact. This integral approach enables us to face industrial and urban challenges from a standpoint that is aligned with circular economy principles.

Solutions

Valuation of organic waste
We work on state-of-the-art technologies for the valuation of organic waste, such as solid urban waste and sludge. We apply biological processes such as biomethanization – both under wet and dry conditions – and atad (autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion) systems for the production of biogas and high-quality fertilisers. We also implement composting and state-of-the-art biological wastewater treatment, which includes technologies such as dn, sbr, mbr, biofilm and pn/anammox. These solutions optimise the recovery of nutrients and significantly reduce environmental impact.

Valuation of inorganic waste
We develop sustainable hydrometallurgical processes for the recovery of critical materials such as lithium (li), cobalt (co) and rare earths. We use deep eutectic solvents (dess) and organic acids to improve the extraction and recovery of these materials, which are essential in a range of industries.
Digital solutions for waste
We integrate digital tools, including mathematical models and decision support systems (dsss), which optimise the design and operation of waste valuation and treatment processes. We incorporate environmental assessments such as life-cycle analysis (lca), water footprint and carbon footprint, with a view to ensuring a holistic and sustainable approach in all stages of the process.
