Projects
SUSAAN
SUStainable Antimicrobial and Antiviral Nanocoating

Summary
Infectious diseases constitute a global threat to both health and the economy. Antimicrobial and antiviral nanocoating provide solutions for reducing transmission of viruses and bacteria via surfaces, although their effectiveness, durability and sustainability still face challenges. SUSAAN is developing sustainable coatings based on active nanomaterials by combining bio-based materials and inorganic nanoparticles. These are applicable to textiles, plastics and metals, and are validated in sectors such as the textile industry, bathroom accessories and the production of plugs and switches.
Objectives
- Develop sustainable high-performance antimicrobial and antiviral coatings for textile, plastic and metal surfaces.
- Design and optimise active (bio-based and inorganic) nanomaterials to ensure immediate and long-lasting action against bacteria and viruses.
- Increase effectiveness and durability, improve stability and sustainability, and validate industrial scalability.
- Ensure safety for health and the environment via toxicological and ecotoxicological tests, and complete assessments of environmental, economic and social impact.
- Boost European industrial competitiveness in strategic sectors via innovative and sustainable coatings.
