The Ceit multi-sensor positioning system successfully passes the concept testing conducted at the Port of Bilbao

The purpose of this concept testing was to show the suitability in situ of the system developed by the Transport and Sustainable Mobility group at Ceit to deploy new digital services with high added value within the port logistics sector.

The services that will be able to be offered via the Ceit multi-sensor positioning system in the future will be directly applied in several port operations, such as the monitoring of maritime traffic based on positioning data and the course taken by vessels. Thanks to this service, known as TRAFF, port staff will be able to monitor maritime traffic both within the port and its environs, providing them with very valuable information to help them perform their work.

Additionally, the multi-sensor positioning system will also be able to deploy the ROUTE service to determine optimum routes by assigning the safest and fastest route to each vessel in order to improve maritime traffic both within the port and its environs.

Furthermore, the system developed by Ceit will also lend support to mooring operations via the BERTH service, which is capable of following up on recommendations made to the captain about manoeuvres when approaching the port, based on precise and continuous monitoring of the vessel’s position at all times.

Lastly, all these services will provide real-time data to a fourth module referred to as DTMNG, which will be in charge of managing the information and making predictions based on artificial intelligence techniques, with a view to facilitating decision-making on the part of port managers.

Throughout the PortPos project, which is funded by Puertos del Estado as part of the Ports4.0 initiative, the Ceit research team has taken field measures so as to fine tune the multi-sensor positioning system, which was validated as an enabling technology for the deployment of the services described here.
