The President of the University, María Iraburu, appoints four new Vice Presidents

The President of the University of Navarra, María Iraburu, has appointed four new vice presidents. Pablo Sánchez-Ostiz, who was Vice President of Academic Affairs is now Vice President for Faculty; Paloma Grau, Deputy Director of Faculty in the School of Engineering is the new Vice President of Research and Sustainability; Secundino Fernández, Dean of the School of Medicine has been appointed Vice President of Faculty Affairs; and Rosalía Baena, professor of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences is the new Vice President of students.

The former office of the Vice President of Students, which assumes the responsibilities of the Vice President's Office for International Relations, has changed its name to adopt the most common denomination currently used in universities. The office of the Vice President of Research has added the term Sustainability to its title as a reflection of the importance of this area in research activity in the context of the 2025 Strategy of the university.

With this restructuring, Iciar Astiasarán, who held the position of Vice President for Research; Pilar Lostao, until now Vice President for International Relations; and Tomás Gómez-Acebo, Vice President for Students, have left the Office of the Executive Council. Professors Astiasarán, Lostao and Gómez-Acebo will continue with their teaching and research in their respective schools.

Pablo Sánchez-Ostiz, Vice President of Faculty

Pablo Sánchez-Ostiz Gutiérrez (Pamplona) is a professor of criminal law. He holds a Degree and doctorate in Law and Philosophy from the University of Navarra. He went on research stays to Múnich, Erlangen-Núremberg and Friburgo, amongst other destinations. He was awarded a scholarship from the Alexander von Humboldt foundation. He was a professor in Universidad Pompeu Fabra (1994-2003). His main lines of research focus on the concept of imputation in law and the principles of criminal law. He has been associate dean (2004-05) and Dean of the School of Law (2005-13). From June 2016 he has held the position of Vice Rector for Academic Affairs.

Paloma Grau, Vice President of Research and Sustainability

Paloma Grau Gumbau (Benifaio, Valencia) is a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences of the School of Engineering and a collaborating researcher at Ceit. She has been Deputy Director of Faculty in the School since 2016. She received completed her degree in Chemical Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and PhD from the University of Navarra in the Industrial Engineering program. Her line of research focuses on environmental engineering, specifically in the development of new solutions and technologies for water management and treatment based on mathematical modeling. She has directed and participated in national and international research projects, has been part of different working committees within the IWA (International Water Association) and has done research stays in universities in Belgium and Canada. She is married with 3 daughters.

Secundino Fernández, Vice President of Faculty Affairs

Secundino Fernández González (Astorga, León) is a Professor and a Consultant of Otorhinolaryngology at the Clínica Universidad de Navarra. He holds a degree and doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra and PADE from IESE. He has carried out research in universities including Oxford and in Harvard Macy Institute. Associate Dean of students and Faculty Affairs in the School of Medicine (2006-14), he served as Dean since 2014. He directs the Medical Engineering Laboratory of the school. His lines of research focus on laryngeal diseases, voice disorders and the design of equipment for the diagnosis of these pathologies. He is a member of the Royal National Academy of Medicine. He is married and has 4 children.

Rosalía Baena, Vice President of Students

Rosalía Baena Molina (Puente Genil, Córdoba) is a professor of English Philology. She received her doctorate from the University of Salamanca. She has done research stays at the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), Hofstra University (New York) and Boston College. Her research interests include questions of cultural identity in contemporary English-language narrative, as well as the emotional and ethical impact of literature.

At the University of Navarra she has been Director of the Humanities Council, Director of the Department of Philology and Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences from 2012 to 2020. She is married and has 4 children.
