The overall goal of EBSF 2 – the European Bus System of the Future 2 is to improve the efficiency of operations of Bus Public Transport in terms of costs and energy consumption and to increase the modal share of bus services by improving the bus image for the users. The project consortium has identified six research areas with the highest potential to produce breakthrough changes in the existing bus scenario, namely:
- Energy Strategy and Auxiliaries.
- Green Driver Assistance Systems.
- IT Standards introduction in existing fleet.
- Vehicle Design (Capacity, Accessibility, Modularity).
- Intelligent Garage and predictive maintenance.
- Interface between Bus and Urban infrastructure.
For each of them, EBSF_2 is committed to complete the development and test a set of technological solutions to evaluate to which extent such innovations can contribute to make bus systems more attractive and efficient. EBSF_2 is based on demonstrators, i.e. the innovative technological solutions are tested in 11 urban environments across Europe, involving more than 500 buses: Barcelona, Dresden, Gothenburg, Helsinki, Lyon, London, Madrid, Paris, Ravenna, San Sebastian and Stuttgart.

CEIT coordinates the San Sebastian demonstration site, which is testing four technological innovations about driver assistance, bus layout design, IT standards and intelligent maintenance. CEIT is also the technology provider and developer of three technological innovations.
CEIT-IK4 has developed NONVIS, which is a non-visual driver assistant system that exploits drivers’ haptic and auditory sensorial channels to provide assistance for economy and green driving. NONVIS works as a complement of EKOBUS, which is the driver assistant system that implemented by DBUS fleet since 2015.
CEIT-IK4 has developed and tested the design software BPST (Bus Passenger Simulation Tool), which has shown to be very useful to design optimal bus layouts. BPST uses 3D agent-based simulation to evaluate bus layout in terms of passengers’ accessibility, satisfaction and flow, and boarding, alighting and dwell times, considering diverse operation policies and up to nine distinct passenger profiles. Jointly with DBUS and Irizar, CEIT-IK4 has evaluated the performance of several bus layouts, including the new Irizar i2e Electric Bus, according to the particular distribution of passengers of Donostia-San Sebastian.
Intelligent Garage and Predictive Maintenance
CEIT-IK4 has developed and tested the maintenance assistant system WARM. This wearable device helps maintenance workers to simplify and reduce the time spent in paperwork activities. WARM also provide allows to enlarge, enrich and complete the information reported by means of the inclusion of pictures, video clips and audio annotations.
IT Standard Introduction in Existing Fleets
WARM system use the new IT standard EN13149 parts7/8/9 for exchanging data between the maintenance device, the bus and the back-office. In addition, NONVIS driver assistant system uses the IT standard EN13149 parts7/8/9 to connect with EKOBUS driver assistant system, to get the information about driving status.
San Sebastian Demonstration is led by CEIT with a support of DIGIMOBEE, DBUS, IRIZAR and UITP.
