WILLOW

Holistic and integrated digital tools for extended lifetime and profitability of offshore wind farms

Summary

The WILLOW project, coordinated by Ceit, aims to revolutionize the management of offshore wind farms through an integrated, data-driven, open-source solution. Its objective is to balance energy production with turbine lifetime, optimizing costs, reducing noise pollution, and increasing energy efficiency.

The initiative will develop a structural health monitoring system capable of providing high-quality, reliable data to assess turbine lifetime. It will use physical models, artificial intelligence, and virtual sensing techniques, enabling a reduction in the number of required sensors and improving maintenance planning and decision-making at wind farm level.

Objectives

Design an integrated structural monitoring system that combines different sensor technologies with physical and data-driven models.

Implement cybersecurity strategies to ensure the integrity of monitoring and control systems.

Develop degradation and structural fatigue prediction models to optimize maintenance planning.

Create artificial intelligence tools for decision-making and turbine diagnostics at wind farm level.

Reduce inspection costs by up to 50% and extend the lifetime of offshore wind farms by 5 years.

Decrease noise pollution by 4% and reduce the levelized cost of energy by up to 10%.

Ceit’s role

In addition to coordinating the project, Ceit leads the work package focused on designing the structural monitoring system combining multiple sensing technologies, physical models, and data-driven models. The center will also work on designing the cybersecurity strategy applied at different levels across offshore wind farms.
