Projects
H-ACERO
NetZero Iron & Steel Industry based on Technology that uses Hydrogen and Oxygen intensively in Production Processes.

Summary
H-ACERO2 seeks to boost the decarbonization of the iron & steel sector in the Basque Country via the incorporation of hydrogen as a source of alternative energy to fossil fuels during different stages of the steel production process. The project researches and develops innovative technologies that use H₂ and O₂ to reduce CO₂ emissions and improve energy efficiency in processes such as those involving electric arc furnace (EAF), ladles and troughs, reheating furnaces and oxyfuel cutting. H-ACERO2 involves many changes with a view to making advances towards a more sustainable iron & steel industry, owing to the range of courses of action and different levels of maturity available.
Objectives
- Analyse the H₂ in the EAF in order to reduce CO₂ emissions.
- Assess the4 implications of green and conventional DRI in EAF fusion.
- Design suitable refractories for oxyfuel combustion and air combustion with H₂ in all equipment (EAF, reheating furnaces, ladles, troughs).
- Specify reheating furnaces to ensure their adaptation to H₂ use.
- Adapt oxyfuel cutting installation for tests using large test tubes and at high temperature.
- Assess the environmental and economic impact of the use of hydrogen
