CEIT works in the development of computer tools capable of assisting product designers during the development phase of the product to study their maintenance and manufacturing procedures. This analysis can be performed using manual, interactive, or automated approaches.

In a manual approach, a custom author tool is used to generate the motion of each component and to define the sequence of the operations and the tooling. The REVIEN project uses such approach with authoring and e-learning applications for the training of maintenance crews.

Interactive applications based on Virtual Reality allow a realistic interaction with the virtual mock-up of the product. The interaction can be enhanced with the addition of haptic (tactile or force) feedback. The project REVIMA uses this approach to provide a design tool to assess the accessibility of maintenance crews to critical systems of an aircraft engine. The system used the combination of 3D stereo graphics and a custom designed haptic design developed by CEIT.

A pure geometrical analysis of a product can provide a wealth of information about its assembly or disassembly procedures. This information can be used as basis for several analysis types from the maintenance or manufacturing procedure to the motion required by a robot or human operator to access a component.

Specific capabilities:

  • Geometric analysis of the digital mock-up of a product to determine the precedence relationships of the assembly/disassembly operations of a product.
  • Motion planning to generate the access route to or from a component.
  • Identification of the procedural structure of maintenance or manufacturing operations.
  • Real-time graphics and fast collision detection algorithms for massive scenes.
