Summary

The goal is to replace current chemical intensively-needed psoition capture element manufacturing systems with new, more sustainable and versatile manufacturing methods.

The work will be structured around five tasks equally distributed among the partners involved, in order to complete the value chain for the manufacture of an optical encoder: On the one hand, the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) will be responsible for the design, sizing and characterization of the encoder; for its part, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the manufacturer of optomechanical systems SnellOptics will collaborate in the design and prototyping of process optics for femtosecond lasers; and the laser group of the Ceit-Ik4 technology center will complete the manufacturing processes with femtosecond lasers as well as the mechanical design and integration together with Fagor Automotion, the company that will also be responsible for validating the new prototype. The objective of the project is to improve the cold formability of advanced high resistance bainitic steels with applications in the automotive industry, by controlling second phases and optimizing the microstructure. This involves combining high creep resistance with adequate ductility and good performance under orifice expansion test conditions. In bainitic microstructures, the presence of second phases such as martensite or retained austenite play a crucial role, although the subject has so far been little studied. Knowledge of microstructural transformation mechanisms and deformation and damage processes may allow better control of these properties. As a result of the project, guidelines will be defined for the production of advanced high resistance bainitic steels (Bainitic AHSS) with optimal properties.

Ceit's role in the project

Develop manufacturing processes with laser femtoseconds on metals. Mechanical design and integration of a femtosecond laser based recording system together with Fagor Automotion.
