Powder metallurgy is an advanced technology for the manufacture of high performance engineering components and has application in a variety of sectors. Powder metallurgy makes it possible to use additive manufacturing processes to build pieces that cannot be built by any other method or that require intensive and costly machining work. Some of the sectors which currently use powder metallurgy are the auto, aerospace and tools industries. The range of powder metallurgy-related topics that will be discussed at EuroPM2018 include:
• additive manufacturing
• the creation of metal powders via atomization
• the development of special alloys for extreme environments
• hard and ultrahard materials
• hot isostatic pressing heat treatments
• new materials, processes and applications

EuroPM2018, co-chaired by Ceit-IK4 and PMG Polmetasa, will be a meeting point for over 800 attendees who will be coming from companies in the powder metallurgy sector and from 51 countries.

The congress, which will be opened by Iñigo Urkullo, President of the Basque Government, aims to position the Basque Country as a leader in production and manufacturing that uses metal powders, taking advantage of Spain's position as the number two supplier of powder metallurgy products in Europe.

Ceit-IK4 will give 14 technical presentations at the congress on topics including metal powder manufacturing through atomization, the development of special diamond tools, new alloys and manufacturing methods, the sintering of tungsten carbide tools and special steels for nuclear applications.

The congress will attract representatives from companies within the sector as well as subject experts, and the combination of the technical program and the exhibitions will offer a forum for providing an overview of the manufacturing industry and demonstrating the potential uses of this technology. Attendees will discuss questions related to the advances made within additive manufacturing and new materials based on metal powders, as well the development of new applications that open up new challenges and opportunities for companies in the sector.
