Summary

The Near Net Shape (NNS) process using hot isostatic powder compaction (NNS-HIP) has the potential to revolutionize the manufacture of complex high-performance parts by allowing efficient use of resources and materials with consequent savings of economic and environmental costs. In order to take advantage of this technology, important challenges must be faced, among which the difficulty of predicting the inherent distortions of the process, which, on the one hand, limits the NNS capacity of the process, and, on the other hand, hinders and makes the process of tooling design.

The objective of this project is to develop a numerical tool for predicting distortions in metal powder HIP. For this, a constitutive model for porous metallic materials will be developed that describes the densification of these materials during the HIP process and that will be validated by means of experimental tests that will be carried out throughout the project. In addition, a numerical tool will be developed to optimize the geometry of the container so that the dimensions of the final piece conform to the required tolerances.
