J. Gil Sevillano is professor at TECNUN, the Technological Campus of the University of Navarra in San Sebastian, Spain, and head of its Department of Materials Engineering since 1994, is also currently Principal Researcher and head (since 1996) of the Materials Department of CEIT. He served as Vice-Dean of TECNUN during the period 1994-1996.
He obtained his Engineering Degree in Metallurgy at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Navarra (1969) and his Doctorate at the Materials and Applied Metallurgy Department (MTM) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium (1974), where he spent also a half-year in 1978 as associated scientist.
His main research and technical interests include the mechanical stress-strain response, structural evolution, texture development and fracture of materials undergoing large plastic strains. During the last ten years he has been active doing research for the understanding sizeeffects in plasticity (gradient-dependent plasticity, geometrically necessary dislocations) and in the experimental study of the plasticity of small volumes using nanoindentation with applications for nanocrystalline materials and Microsystems.
He has participated in more than 40 research projects, many of them international collaborative projects, has directed 19 doctoral thesis and is author or co-author of about 130 scientific papers in refereed journals.
